These Are The Surprising Snacks You Should Remove From Your Pantry Immediately—They're So Bad For You!

If you’re hungry between meals, then you should definitely grab a healthy snack! Depriving yourself when you’re hungry only leads to overeating at your next meal. 

However, some snacks can really ramp up your calorie intake for the day, which can be especially damaging to your metabolism if they contain no nutritional benefits whatsoever. 

These are the snacks health experts say you should avoid if  you’re trying to watch your weight or shed a few pounds—and some of them may surprise you, because they’re often labeled as “healthy.”

To learn about a few of the worst, most unhealthy snacks out there, we spoke to Christy Brissette, MS, RD, and president of 80 Twenty, Nutrition. 

She pointed out four surprising options anyone trying to lead a healthy lifestyle should kick to the curb: cereal bars, low-fat cheese, rice cakes, and “diet” yogurt.

Cereal Bars

Cereal bars are a quick, healthy snack you can eat on the go right? Unfortunately, Brissette says this isn't the case. 

Their high sugar content make them some of the most unhealthy options around. 

"Most cereal bars are packed with sugars and starches that only make you hungrier," she says. 

If you can't bear to part with your bars, though, you can at least make healthier options. 

Brissette you should look for varieties that are low in sugar but high in protein and fiber. 

Your best bet will have less than 5g of sugar but pack in 15g of protein and 5g of fiber.

Low-Fat Cheese

If you think cheese being labeled low-fat or fat-free makes it a healthy option, Brissette says you should think again. 

"I have clients that switch to low-fat cheese so they can eat more of it... And end up going through a block feeling unsatisfied," she says. 

Yikes! Guess less can often times lead to more... Instead of depriving yourself of the real, tasty deal, Brissette says people watching their weight should simply indulge is smaller amounts of regular, full-fat cheese.

Rice Cakes

Rice cakes are a classic "healthy" snack, except there's one catch: they don't provide any nutritional benefits. 

While they may be low in calories, your body will get nothing out of the calories they do contain, and this is a serious no-go if you're trying to boost your metabolism. 

"Snacking on low fat, refined carbohydrate foods makes your blood sugar skyrocket and then crash, making you hangry and overcome with cravings," warns Brissette.

"Diet" Yogurt

Remember what we said about low-fat cheese? 

Yup, the same applies to yogurt. It's not actually healthier! Any "diet" yogurt (fat-free, low-fat, etc.) is typically filled with artificial sweeteners that make you crave sugar. 

"Swap the diet yogurt and get some plain Greek yogurt for some extra protein. 

And don't be afraid of choosing one with 2% fat vs 0%. The fat will keep you satisfied longer," Brissette recommends.

So, there you have it—some of the unhealthiest options may actually surprise you! 

At the end of the day, it's best to focus on the food that can provide you nutrients, rather than the best way to save on calories.
